Hounds of Heaven

Many times, God brings individuals or situations into one's life so that He can draw them unto Himself. Why a person would reject acknowledging the hand of God in this matter is hard to imagine. God has placed christians strategically in all walks of life to be His instruments to effect change by the leading of the Spirit of God. This story is an example of one such case.My family and I were again travelling down to Ontario from Alberta and while on our journey a car with Alberta licence plates would pass us and then he must have pulled into a rest stop or something for a few more miles down the road he would pass us again. I took note of this for it happened a number of times on our journey. We would be driving and sure enough here was this vehicle again passing us. I thought that he was probably heading down to southern Ontario somewhere on holidays to visit family. I do remember that it was during the early winter and it was bitterly cold. We had pulled off the highway for the night and the children were getting ready for bed. It was in White River, northern Ontario, which at one time I believe had the coldest temperature in Canada if I recollect of 75 degrees below zero. Now whether that was with a wind chill factor I am not sure. We had an older yellow and black school bus that I had purchased in Alberta and I had installed a small four burner propane stove and oven at the rear of the bus. The heat from the pilot light helped keep us warm and if it did start to get a tad chillier I would turn on one of the burners for extra heat. I caught a couple of hours sleep and was awake early just communing with the Lord and chatting with my wife. I was in the driver's seat and she was resting on a seat nearby I  had noticed that when I pulled the bus into my spot for the night that this car that had been passing us time and time again along the way was parked right beside us. I said to my wife, there's that car that has been passing us. She said yes, isn't that something. Well, about six o'clock in the morning I heard a door open and watched from my seat in the bus as the fellow walked past my bus and headed towards the restraurant. It was a Voyager Restraurant, a francise of restraurants that were located at Esso Gas Stations at that time. We always had a pot of hot water on the stove at low heat so that if we wanted a cup of coffee or tea, it was at ready disposal. When the young man came back around the corner of the restraurant to his car right away, I sensed that the restraurant was closed. Just as he got to the door of the bus , I opened the door and said, "good morning".. He was a bit suprised and I asked him if the place was open. He said that it wasn't. I said, " would you like a cup of coffee. He said , "do you have some in there?" I said "sure, we always have a pot on, but its instant if you don't mind" He said, "not at all" and I welcomed him in. We got chatting a bit and I said to him" I noticed that you have been travelling from Alberta as well, are you going down to visit family in Ontario."No, he said, I am moving back to Ontario. As the economy out west in Alberta was booming at the time. I said, "did you lose your job" "No, he said, I have had about five different jobs that is not the problem" " If you don't mind my asking I said , then what is the problem. He said that he had worked at five different office jobs and at every job that he worked at there was some born again Christian sharing the gospel with him and that he couldn't take it anymore. I kind of chuckled in my heart as little did he know that I was a born again Christian as well. I prayed that God would give me the words to say to him and I mentioned to him that I kind of knew how they felt as they were burdened for his soul , that he would know for sure if he were to die that he would be going to heaven I then told him how that God places on the heart's of born again Christians a burden for their fellow man and that he was a receipient of that love. He was about finished his coffee by then and I mentioned to him that I was a born again Christian as well and that I would like to share some Christian literature with him. For some reason or other, he declined that invitation, and said that he had to get going,. I said , "nice meeting you, have a good trip, maybe we will see you again sometime. We shook hands and he left. My wife and I prayed that God would bring Salvation to his soul. And if he had that many people trying to share with him, I'm sure that he did. I have called my fellow brothers, the hounds of Heaven. Here is a poem written in commemoration of them. , Enjoy

HOUNDS OF HEAVEN

Lord send the hounds of Heaven
To keep old satan at bay
Men who live with passion for God
Men who will obey
Their charge to preach the gospel
To every creature on earth
To make the way, clear and plain
The message of New Birth

Not the birth of fleshly nature
Not of human kind
But the birth from Heaven above
For heart and soul and mind
To be a born again believer
Through God's Holy Word
By saving faith in Jesus Christ
By His Spirit being assured

God came down in human flesh
To dwell among His creation
Showing the world, a sinless Son
The ruler over all nations
And blind they were, how blind they were
To the fulness of His glory
Go ye hounds of heaven go
And tell that blessed story

About the Poet
I came to know the Lord as my personal Saviour in January of 1972. I was married on Oct 21,1966 to my wife Linda who also loves the Lord. We have ten children and now twenty-four grand children. In Aug 2012 we got the announcement of the birth of our first GREAT grand child (a baby girl). I was thrilled to find others of like precious faith and belief in Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! What a Savior! I am presently living in Champion, Alberta, Canada but we are originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. That is where the poem Canadian Tribute to America was birthed. One Sunday as I walked across the city on my way to church I came to the top of a hill and looked across at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. After watching the events of the Sept 11 tragedy it was weighing on my heart and mind and the Lord gave me these words. We came to Calgary and when my oldest daughter saw this poem she said, Dad, whats this? and I said a poem and she replied Dad, thats not a poem , thats a song and she then went to the piano and began to sing and play it. The result of which turned into a song entitled, A Canadian Tribute to America which she recorded on CD. garyjamessmith2005@yahoo.ca
