If I Would Have Known

IF I WOULD HAVE KNOWN

If I would have known what mom was to say

I would have responded with "Yikes"

"You have to quit hockey you’re now going to learn

How to play the Scottish bagpipes

To young to negotiate a settlement fair

After all, what choice did I have

Mom was the boss , dad even said so

He believed that, right to his grave

The lessons were hard, on a chanter I learnt

My mistakes pointed out by my peers

When you don't want to play it's harder to learn

And to learn took me plenty of years

The other thing now that comes to my mind

That bothered me right to the hilt

Was wearing the starch shirts, the wool jacket and hat

But most of all was the kilt

The whistles I got from those in the crowd

At the places, where we played

Catcall from friends, making mocking replies

Was a memory I frequently replayed

Not until years later did it suddenly dawn

The music was joy to my soul

The marching became an uplifting response

Finally a bagpiper made whole

I Thank you mom, dad  sure was right

So glad that you were the boss

Without your decision as to my undertaking

I would have suffered such loss

The drum and the drones all tuned together

Symphony marching in time

No puck or no stick can ever displace it

The bagpiper's peaceful sublime

About the Poet
I came to know the Lord as my personal Saviour in January of 1972. I was married on Oct 21,1966 to my wife Linda who also loves the Lord. We have ten children and now twenty-four grand children. In Aug 2012 we got the announcement of the birth of our first GREAT grand child (a baby girl). I was thrilled to find others of like precious faith and belief in Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! What a Savior! I am presently living in Champion, Alberta, Canada but we are originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. That is where the poem Canadian Tribute to America was birthed. One Sunday as I walked across the city on my way to church I came to the top of a hill and looked across at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. After watching the events of the Sept 11 tragedy it was weighing on my heart and mind and the Lord gave me these words. We came to Calgary and when my oldest daughter saw this poem she said, Dad, whats this? and I said a poem and she replied Dad, thats not a poem , thats a song and she then went to the piano and began to sing and play it. The result of which turned into a song entitled, A Canadian Tribute to America which she recorded on CD. garyjamessmith2005@yahoo.ca
