The Bible Read Me

The Bible Read Me

The Bible read me...Hallelujah

As I began to read the pages within

I found out soon it was a real eye opener

As to what I had thought about sin

Twenty four years old and an novice

When it came to reading God's Word

We probably had a Biible somewhere

But dust had it definitely covered

It was in a small church in the country

Where the Bible was revered by all

Each Sunday as they came with

 their families

After  the preaching there was an altar call

If there's anyone here who doesn't know the Lord

You can come forward today

Coming forward will not save you

But someone will show you the way

This talk was completely foreign to me

For I didn't know what being saved meant

I tried each time to dismiss the thought of it

But service after service my ear to it was bent

Listening to the Word being preached

Stirred something inside of me

I began to squirm in an emotional way

As my anger rose to a higher degree

I never knew what real conviction was

In regards to how it affects the heart

But when we're shown by God the Word of Truth

The Holy Spirit begins to do His part

The Word of God is quick and powerful

More sharper than any two edged sword

A discerner of the thoughts and intents of our heart's

That's the power in the reading of God's Word

Something kept me coming back to church

Even though it exposed my sin

There was no finger pointing by the congregation

But God's Spirit was working within

Soon I was in agreement with my judgement

Yes...I was lost and undone

Definetly on the road to Hell

Unless I trusted in God's Son

Every Sunday the pastor was faithful

In giving again his altar call

If anyone here wants to find the Saviour

Just come forward...we'll explain it all

O I was moved each time He asked it

As a hymn was played in quietness

But I was too proud to admit my need

And went on home Salvationless

But the Word was still stirring within me

Of its truth I would daily meditate

Somehow I couldn't let go of the thought

If I were to die today...Hell would be my fate

God's Word had brought that conviction

My realization of what sin had done

It had separated me not only from God but also from His Son

I heard about the Cross of Christ

I heard about His glorious Resurrection

I heard about the love of God

How it was sent in our direction

I heard about a coming Saviour

To take His bride on Home

The love of God became an attraction to me

But I remained still lost and undone

Then there was a week of special meetings

About the second coming of Christ

How that He would bring all those to Heaven with Him

Who trusted in His Sacrifice

It began to make a lot of sense to me

The arrow of truth had made its mark

I knew I had a need of that Saviour

I knew it right well in my heart

But as usual when the invitation was given

After the preaching was done

I remained steadfast in my seat again

Satan's control over me still won

But after an evening of fellowshipping

After friday evenings service was done

We headed on home in quietness

And thinking about God's Son

Can you believe it my three year old daughter

Piped up with this thought in her mind

Dad!... Dad!.. you gotta get saved

Or you will be left behind

O did that statement ever smite me

My attention span was under arrest

I could not dismiss the truth of it

She hit the nail on the head no less

Go on to bed now honey I said

You know it's getting pretty late

Love you dad...you gotta get saved

Don't worry honey...I will I said

I sat alone at the table later

Bowing my head in prayer

Reading from the gospel of John

Where the I am's are found there

Just before I had read God's Word

These are the words that I prayed

God if there's such a thing as knowing Christ as one's Saviour

May you make my heart to obey

And another thing God can I make a request

To add to my previous one

If Jesus Christ were to come back today

I want to know Him as your Son

I don't know God if it's a feeling I get

Or if there is something that I have to do

But I ask you dear Lord to reveal it to me

As I read Your Word on through

Then I got to the I am's section

In the gospel of John

Where Jesus says I am the Way...truth. .and life

I am the Resurrection

I am the door..if any man ebter in he shall be saved

I am the good Shepherd who loveth His sheep always

I am the light of the world

I am the bread and water too

I am all of these and more

Is what the thoughts of the I am's led me too

Suddenly the Holy Spirit brougt it on home

Brought it on home to me

If Jesus Christ were all these I am's

Then He was...Salvation to me

I turned my bible over and headed towards the bed

I bowed my head and heart in prayer

These are the words I said

Dear Heavenly Father there's nothing I have to do

In regards to my Salvation

For Jesus did all the work for me

Through His Crucifixion

I admit that I am a sinner

In need of your saving grace

I ask Thee Lord Jesus now into my heart

For I believe You took my place!

And in He came... indeed He did!

My sins burden was rolled away

Such a peace and joy flooded my soul

I knew I was saved that day

Baptized by the Holy Spirit

Into the family of God

My eternal destiny fixed now for Heaven!

Hallelujah for reading God's Word!

Hallelujah what a Saviour

About the Poet
I came to know the Lord as my personal Saviour in January of 1972. I was married on Oct 21,1966 to my wife Linda who also loves the Lord. We have ten children and now twenty-four grand children. In Aug 2012 we got the announcement of the birth of our first GREAT grand child (a baby girl). I was thrilled to find others of like precious faith and belief in Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! What a Savior! I am presently living in Champion, Alberta, Canada but we are originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. That is where the poem Canadian Tribute to America was birthed. One Sunday as I walked across the city on my way to church I came to the top of a hill and looked across at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. After watching the events of the Sept 11 tragedy it was weighing on my heart and mind and the Lord gave me these words. We came to Calgary and when my oldest daughter saw this poem she said, Dad, whats this? and I said a poem and she replied Dad, thats not a poem , thats a song and she then went to the piano and began to sing and play it. The result of which turned into a song entitled, A Canadian Tribute to America which she recorded on CD. garyjamessmith2005@yahoo.ca
