The Music We Love

With the sad ending of a life

Came words of a wonderful hymn,

“Abide With Me” mailed to his wife,

Music and prayer for Lyte’s life grim.

“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,”

Comfort to Protestant people,

Also used as a battle hymn,

The Bible Luther’s manual.

Because their children knew the Lord,

Spafford then could say, “It is Well,”

‘Though they perished in a shipwreck.

We can sing and this story tell.

George Matheson lost his parents,

The love of his life and his sight.

“Oh Love That Will Not Let Me Go”

Yes! He knew God’s love in that plight.

Heber wanted songs with meaning,

Congregational hymns his aim.

“Holy -  holy -  God Almighty”

His motive pure – no thought of fame.

Elliott, she of poetry,

Invalid, acquainted with grief,

Then sought to reach out to others.

“Just As I Am” voiced her belief.

“Ten Thousand Angels” made him read –

He was not a Christian, you see –

Overholt sang the song one day,

Then asked Christ, his Savior to be.

Weigle was converted at twelve.

Does no one care was his sad cry.

“Noone Cared for Me Like Jesus”

Around the world heard by and by.

Someone suggested a title.

Ira Stanphill wrote the lyric,

Putting it aside for a time.

“There’s Room at the Cross” -  it’s basic!

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only

begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not

perish, but have eternal life.  For God did not send the

Son into the world to judge the world, but that the

world should be saved through Him.  John 3: 16 & 17
