Celebrate Christmas

Is it the pretty red blooms and green leaves
Of the beautiful poinsettia
Or the festive lights strung on ev’ry tree
That make Christmas special to you and me?

Is it the gifts wrapped and under the tree
Or the special cake we all like so much?
Maybe the Christmas cards we love to send
So thoughtfully, very carefully penned?

Could it be the outfit we plan to wear -
A Christmas sweater or beautiful dress?
If that’s all there is to Christmas for us,
Do we stop to think just what is the fuss?

Do we miss the real message of Christmas?
Just whose birthday are we celebrating?
The One who came especially for us -
Is real worship, to us,  superfluous?

The shepherds made it their priority.
They left their flocks, at night, to find The Babe,
Holy One about whom the angels spoke,
Announcing His birth to the common folk.

“ And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.  And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.  And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.  But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.  And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.”
 Luke 2: 16 - 20
