Harvest Time
Viewed Last 24 Hours: 1 time

Harvest Time

Sent, they stand with sharpened sythes

The field of corn a drooping harvest green and brown

Ready, beyond ready, to be cut and set in shocks

Field mice scatter as the sythe moves rhythmically along the row

A helper gathers up the stalks and ties them into shocks

Standing like silent sentries in the field of stubs

The ripened ears of corn have been picked

Awaiting a time of husking, of work and laughter

As the bushels are emptied into a farm wagon

Drawn by noisy tractor or a pair of snorting horses

It is the time of harvest in a bygone era

A quieter time, a saner time, but not necessarily a happier time

Not necessarily a happier time
