On the Farm

There is a kind of animal
Which breeds upon the farm
It is not pet or wild
Nor likely to do any harm

It moos, clucks, oinks, baas
Or heehaws, hisses, or quacks as the case may be
Runs in herds or flocks or even single-y
All there at the farmer's choosing

How many can you name of these chosen
Producers of meat, milk, eggs, wool, labor
Or even pleasure?

How many have you seen alive and in pasture
Or stall, barnyard, or pen?
Or their produce on your dinner table or on your back?

On the Farm (c)2001 Quentin Clingerman

Author's note: Written for young children to be read to them by older siblings, parents, or grandparents.
