Moses before the Mission

 Moses Before the Mission

I actually would rather not,
If I return and then am caught,
It will not go too well for me,
I shan't say "no", nor shall I flee,
But, surely, I'm not right for this,
I fear the task will go amiss,
Another is a better choice,
I haven't even got the voice.

"Who shall I say has sent me there?"
And why would Egypt even care,
Or Israel leave fertile land
To journey out on desert sand?
He says, "I am" is who I say
Has sent me forward on my way,
I doubt I am, but God no doubt
Knows well what He is all about.

"And why should they believe in me?"
I merely am a man, you see,
No more, no less than any man,
Though less, I think, than one who can
Achieve this mighty mission here
With less than my more mortal fear,
Man's mortal magic pales before
The rod He gives where faith grows more.

I can not speak, my tongue gets tied,
I'll stammer with no place to hide,
My words will fail and not stand tall
Within the mighty pharaoh's wall,
Oh, God now sounds a bit perturbed,
It's time my fainting heart is curbed,
And Aaron comes to speak, just so
It's time, it's time, for me to go.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
