      The Donkey I Retrieved

For what and where are we to go?
The donkey’s look appeared to ask,
Perhaps, was I who had to know,
Not he, hand-picked to do his task.

And so, he went where he was led
To carry Christ upon his back,
And I bore questions in my head,
A trait for which I have a knack.

Will He ascend to David’s throne?
Will He unlock our chains and cage?
Is He the temple’s cornerstone
Who builds the Messianic Age?

The Savior entered through the gate,
We sang, “Hosanna,” as He rode
The donkey born to carry weight-
The Son of God who bore our load.

And when our songs of praise were done,
The donkey ate his straws of hay,
I thought of crowns for David’s Son
To celebrate our special day.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
