Tower of Self-Esteem

               Tower of Self- Esteem

Esteem of self we seek and so we build
With feel-good workers willing towers high
Until confusion stops what feelings willed,
And then our Babel fails to reach its sky.

Our bricks had not endured the heat of truth
And crumbled under weight of foolish heights,
Our runny mortar like fast flowing youth
Had not the bond of wisdom, but delights.

Our plan had not the Architect who draws
Designs from everlasting building blocks
He offers us who build despite our flaws,
Which we declare as tools outside the box.

But when our hubris fails to raise esteem,
And humbled down we seek His true design,
The Architect is ready to redeem
With plans He’s drawn from sacrifice divine.

Rich Tassinari 6/28/15

As we attempt to increase our self-esteem by raising up a good feeling about ourselves, we neglect the truth that we are made in the image and likeness of God and must follow His guidence to find who we are. Instead we think we can define everything about who we are by the way we feel. We do not know anymore what a man is, a woman is, or a marriage is among many other things.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
