Cain

                Cain

My disregarded offering!
How could I tell, you ask?
Because I was still suffering
At every daily task
The sentence I inherited
To eke a life from dirt,
A punishment not merited,
Nor one I could avert.

But he, the younger of us two,
A rival from the first,
My brother with a kinder view
I envied and I cursed,
His offering came after mine,
My gift was adequate
Until his firstlings did outshine
And make my gift unfit.

And so, the ground that drank my sweat
Cried out to drink his blood,
The soil beneath my feet ran wet,
His life drained in the mud,
No more would he be chosen first,
No more would I be last,
A judgement I longed to reverse
And bury in the past.

But still, another sound was heard
From where my kin lay dead,
It was no earthbound human word
The bloodstained ground had said,
The God who hears a silent thought
Had heard the chilling cry
Of death that comes when man has fought
And one of His will die.

My punishment I merited
Although I begged for less,
And earth I still inherited
By mercy, I confess.
The mark of mercy I shall wear,
Though exiled from my farm
And Him from whom my life had care,
And spared my life from harm.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
