Gideon

                Gideon

“I am the least of all my clan,
My clan, the weakest man to man,
Unfit to carry out a task
As big as one of which you ask.” (Gideon)

“But I will always be with you,
No matter what you must go through
To carry out your people’s plea
To God for help to set them free.” (Angel of the Lord)

The words the angel speaks are clear,
But, words designed to sway an ear
Can have a muddied motive too
If spoken from a soul untrue.

Not yet convinced that face to face
He hears from one who’s with God’s grace,
He asks the stranger, “Stay, please wait,”
Proceeds then to investigate.

He leaves, prepares some bread and meat,
A present for the man to eat,
Returns and offers him the meal,
And waits to seal or break the deal.

Is this a meal for man or God?
When touched by heaven’s holy rod
The meal’s consumed by instant fire-
A spark to Gideon’s desire.

The embers of his sacrifice
Glow deep in his soul’s paradise,
Where peace replaces doubt and fear,
When face to face with angels near.

Now Gideon, still lesser than
The warriors of any clan,
Is large in peace and strength and might
To lead the charge for freedom’s fight.

I was having trouble with this poem until I read Gen. Eisenhower’s message to the troops on D-Day which happened 70 years ago today.

"The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people march with you. In company with our brave Allies...you will bring about...security for ourselves in a free world. The free men of the world are marching together toward Victory...And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God on this great and noble undertaking."

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
