Let Go and Haul
Viewed Last 24 Hours: 1 time

Let go and Haul

Lazily lapping on my hull,
The harbor where my vessel sleeps,
Dreamily drifting grey and dull,
The seafog where my thinking keeps.

Dense fog that lacquered all it could
From bow to stern spreads fore and aft,
Encasing dreams I'd understood
Would chart my venture on this craft.

Here, life is still and wet and cold,
Both in the vessel and without,
The time stays young, the heart grows old,
And thinking anchors down my doubt.

Still, hopeful tides slip out and in,
The risings give, recedings take,
A grace and blessing on my sin,
Now, on my vessel, hope's awake.

There, always high above my sphere,
Above, beyond, outside my fog,
My hopeful heart knows all is clear
And sheds from eyes my sinful log.

As heat descends from Holy High
To harbors cold and wet and still,
The seafog rises to the sky
And dissipates my clouded will.

When back and forth, and forth and back,
The Spirit moving 'round the earth,
Shall blow my ship to run or tack
And catch fair weather's spirit-birth.

Pull down the halyard, raise the sail,
And follow quick the Captain's call,
The Spirit surges where it will,
Let go all seafog doubts and haul.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
