Two Mockingbirds in Winter
Viewed Last 24 Hours: 1 time

         Two Mockingbirds in Winter

A solid drape of grey hung from the sky
Behind the tangled limbs of two black trees;
Between phone poles two wires stretched out high
And long both south and northward endlessly.

Two mockingbirds upon one leafless limb
Hopped sideways closer toward one vacant spot
Between the two on nature’s paradigm
Without as much a glance or prior thought.

Each stopped, then stared into the other’s eyes
Like fighters nose to nose inside a ring,
Two bantam featherweights stood in disguise
‘Til one unfurled a lightning jab with wing.

The other turned its head and hopped away,
A gambit done to draw the foe within,
Then turned and leaped with feathery foray
To stun the bold aggressor on the chin.

The first retreated flying to a wire,
The second claimed the other vacant line,
The first attacked in feathered rapid-fire,
‘though once repelled, unwilling to resign.

Two trees with many branches fanning out
Like roads upon a vast and open map,
More roads than any gad could gadabout,
Or limbs on which one bird could sit and flap.

Two lines of wires stretching overhead
From north to south as far as one could see,
And yet, between these poles, two birds instead,
Must have the other’s line and other’s tree.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
