Brother's Keeper

              Brother’s Keeper

In autumn, north wind prunes and rakes
The back yard garden’s plants and leaves,
Some transient flowers pull up stakes
And through the garden’s alley weave.

The coreopsis disappear,
The roses stay as shafts of wood,
Perennials will reappear
Again and grace the neighborhood.

Most seeds are planted by the wind
Which blows without so much a thought
Of  where a seed’s more apt to send
A root in spring, or where it’s not.

The pink penstemon branches snatch
A bit of old windblown debris,
The leaves and dirt will make good thatch,
It seems a bed within a tree.

Now spring is here, a daisy grows
That cheated windy autumn’s reaper,
Could be the pink penstemon knows
It is a home, a brother’s keeper.

This spring is the first time I've seen one plant growing within another. Maybe nature takes care of its own better than we?

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
