A Senseless Suffering

         A Senseless Suffering

You could have saved us all some pain
If you had taken my advice,
I made it simple, made it plain-
You didn’t have to pay that price.

If you had said, “I’m not a king”,
I could have set you free to live,
But you instead chose suffering
As if you had something to give.

And yet, you heard the people cry,
The same who showered you with praise,
They later called out, “Crucify,”
Why die for those who shunned your ways?

You didn’t speak in your defense,
How foolish not to state your case,
Why, every bit of common sense
Exclaims this life we must embrace.

Of death, I’ve seen it many times,
And some deserve to simply die
For breaking laws, committing crimes,
Or weakness that lives nullify.

But you? You puzzled me, and still,
Although I washed my hands of guilt,
Inside of me there lives a will-
A cross of pain I hadn’t built.

As if there is a living death,
I breathe but can’t escape my tomb,
And die some more with every breath,
Is senseless suffering my doom?

In this poem, I am imagining Pilate talking to Jesus after the crucifixion. If we don’t understand why Christ willingly suffered, we won’t understand our suffering.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
