                    Lazarus

Oh friend, dear friend, what of death's end
could I prepare, and therefore spare
myself death's sorrow? Or falsely borrow
someone's face and leave no trace
of my true tears? When mourning clears
I'll cry no more at your tomb's door.
My dearest friend, death in the end
is dark, has won, and blocks the sun.

Your sisters weep with us who keep
a vigil here. It keeps us near.
We live as threads among the dead
and ghostly weave what we believe
of life and death; but, in a breathe
death knows, not we, eternally.
Where is our Lord who once restored
the blind, the lame, the ill who came?

He comes to weep with us who keep
our vigil here. His heart is near.
The living thread among the dead
with grace He weaves. My soul believes
of life and death, love is His breath
we breathe, yes we, eternally.
My gracious Lord who has restored
the blind and lame, saved all who came.

Oh friend, dear friend, death's not the end.
He has prepared, and nothing's spared
to ease death's sorrow. We need not borrow
any face to hide the trace
of our true tears. When morning clears
we"ll cry no more at death's locked door.
Eternal friend, love in the end
has light, has won, shines from the Son.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
