                      Abraham

Upon the altar lies my heir, my son,
My promise from my God, the sovereign One,
Who feeds my hungry heart, my thirsty soul,
Restores my broken spirit, makes me whole.

Here lies my son, a proper sacrifice,
If ever for His grace there is a price,
I will obey, no nothing here is mine,
No, nothing, or for want I pluck and pine.

My heir, my years outlasting past my death,
My life, and yet we breathe not our own breath,
But He breathed life into my sacrifice,
No never for His grace is there a price.

A gift then given when it could be kept
By me, for me, and spare what tears are wept
To wash away the blood that binds our flesh
One to the other, then move on afresh.

I am refreshed, restored by Him who gives,
And want is dead, in Him fulfillment lives,
A lamb of God, a lamb to sacrifice
He offers me and pays the priceless price.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
