Today if You Shall Hear His Voice

Today If You Shall Hear His Voice

Familiar sounds this time of day are faint
But still a clatter in my inner ear
Behind a sweeter voice I seem to hear
As if I’ve been disturbed, though by a saint.
The voice is asking me to change my way,
The sounds I know so well are fading out
Like something lost I can’t yet live without
And so, I try to keep the voice at bay.
“If you will ask of Me, I will forgive,”
I breathe at ease, but then, a stiffened fear
Of losing all I hold adversely dear,
Clings stubbornly to scraps on which I live.
Again He offers me the better meal,
At ease, I taste, I eat, and then, I heal.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
