Beneath Manbij

               Beneath Manbij

Beneath Manbij the Christians prayed
Below earth's outer skin,
While on the surface demons preyed
Upon their souls within.

The further in where Christians sought
Where Peaceful Spirits dwell,
The farther up and out they brought
His water from their well.

His living water flowed from rock
To quench the desert thirst
Of those who gathered as His flock-
The last who will be first.

The demons offered power, fame,
And wealth upon the earth,
But Christians chose instead to claim
A prize of greater worth.

Inspired by recent discovery of ancient underground Christian worship place in Manbij, Syria.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
