My Evergreen
Viewed Last 24 Hours: 1 time

         My Evergreen

You are a steady green, and I...
I change with changing seasons,
And though we seek the same broad sky,
Our roots give their own reasons.

I bud anew with every spring,
And write new notes on leafless limbs,
To prior season's growth you cling,
And chant the psalms of ancient hymns.

In summer heat, my limbs might fade,
I thirst to keep my spirit up,
Beneath your canopy, your shade,
Will keep you grounded where you sup.

The jewels in autumn, I display,
Translucent orange, yellow, red,
Are complemented by the way
Your raiment's noble, grand, inbred.

The winds of winter sweep the past
And leave me to await the spring,
Your evergreen seems to outlast
The change in time all season's bring.

Yet, side by side, and year by year,
We grow and grown and closer touch
The heart inside we both find dear,
The love we've come to know so much.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
