By the Tuolumne

I step beyond the open door
That swings upon my mortal frame
And see her beauty, and much more,
I hear the call from where she came.

The call from ages long ago,
And, yet, its origin remains,
The glory of a graceful flow,
The river’s rhythm, it retains.

From both within, without my door,
From mountains high to valleys low,
The call’s been spoken, heard before,
Within, without, all natures go.

Must go from where life first became
To seek the path that He ordains,
And ‘though the hills and valleys tame,
The spirit flows across the plains.

The Tuolumne is a river nearby pronounced “Too-all’-um-nee”. It is one of the many rivers in California that starts in the Sierra mountains, flows through the foothills into the San Joaquin valley bringing water to one of the largest agricultural valleys in the world. The wonders of nature are a testimony to a benevolent Creator who has placed even greater wonders within us.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
