Promises
Viewed Last 24 Hours: 1 time

By Rich Tassinari
Other Poems by Rich Tassinari

               Promises

Does a promise need tomorrow?
Time’s not promised; if assigned
To fill a promise, first must borrow
Future by its own design.

You will prosper, multiply,
Will gain the land of milk and honey,
Will raise a nation, satisfy
All you need of goods and money.

But, I’ve seen evil gain the land
Like hungry locusts eat away
The future; who can understand
A promise cancelled in one day?

Perhaps a promise needs a person,
Fills itself when taken up,
And when believed, it’s never broken,
On these promises I sup:

The first- a terror stopped by death,
And then, erased from memory,
This Love breathes but to give Love’s breath
When taken now, eternally.

The second- lamb once lost now found,
The shepherd left the flock for one
Who faithless wandered ‘round and ‘round
Til rescued by One Faithful Son.

The third- when rust destroys the steel
Of armor, helmet, sword, and shield,
Still now, a Hope divinely sealed
Is resurrected when I yield.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
