      For They Shall Be Filled

McBurger Restaurant came to town
With golden arches raised up high,
A golden gateway in the sky
Both seen from up and seen from down
The street as far the hungry eye
Could see a sign raised in the sky.

The boy had walked a country mile
Along the tracks and through the woods,
Then up the street the arches stood
Where to the sign, he raised a smile,
He’d earned ten quarters, now he would
Like others buy what money could.

Today was ribbon-cutting day,
A mound of people swarmed around
Like ants where candy has been found,
The ribbon kept them all at bay
Until the ribbon hit the ground
And then, he heard a whooshing sound.

He couldn’t see above the mass,
But surged upon the current’s flow,
Conveyed by those he didn’t know,
Beneath the arches soon he passed,
Then bumped and tumbled to and fro
And hit the pavement down below.

He landed on another boy,
Their money spilled amidst the wave
Then sank into a trodden grave,
And vanished with all former joy,
Both spoke from where a heart is saved,
“Forgive me,” and they both forgave.

They left together, hungry still,
Without a burger, coke, or fries,
Those former joys that money buys,
Yet had a thirst and hunger filled.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
