The Castaway

The Castaway

A bunny sitting on my stoop
This morning throws me for a loop,
I'm cultivated to prepare
For skunks, opossums, or a hare,
But this is not the world I know,
To see an "x" where "y" should go,
What causes one domestic-dressed
To hop outside where wild-breeds nest?

The opposite I think I know,
We two-legged creatures make it so,
We bring the wild outdoors inside
Within a cozy cage to hide
And view us as we view them two,
Two separate creatures in one view,
But, outside, where the wild world howls,
No room for error life allows.

As I approach the castaway,
It moves to keep a threat at bay,
Proximity I can't reduce,
Nor reach to offer it a truce,
I keep outside the unseen line
That separates wild breeds from mine,
Retreat for lettuce and regroup,
A bunny sitting on my stoop.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
