Jonah

             Jonah

The belly of a whale is dark,
The floor, the walls, the ceiling stark,
A loneliness with room around
For only emptiness, no sound
Except the words I heard before
I slipped into this demon's core.

I hear it now, won't go away,
I hear it louder every day,
To Ninevah you must now go
And tell them of the God you know
Who sees with eyes they can't shut out
The evil practiced thereabout.

He saved me from a death at sea,
I was content to run and flee,
Would rather die than do this deed;
His mercy keeps me up to speed
And frees me from this ocean cell,
Now I must go since all is well.

I speak my  piece, and they repent
It seems before my words are spent,
They're wearing sackcloth, ashes thick
Upon their heads and changing quick,
So He decides to let them be
And that was why I chose to flee.

I knew He had a gracious heart
So why call me first from the start
To prophecy, expect their end,
Then sit around and watch Him bend?
I'd rather die, I'd rather die,
My prophecy?  Who can rely?

The plant, it does provide some shade
Out here beyond the walls they made,
Then down it withers by the worm,
Poor tree, poor me, poor life infirm,
A pity which I now can see
He takes on others, takes on me.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
