Barren

"But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren,
and Elizabeth was advanced in years." Luke 1:7

I turn to You, my Soft-Handed Father,
When weathbeaten in spirit,
Hope-barren and prayer tuneless.

You answer and point me
To Elizabeth, barren,
But brought forth life -- John the Baptist;
To Sarah, barren,
But brought forth life -- Isaac;
To Hannah, barren,
But brought forth life -- Samuel.

You answer:
"They all brought forth fruit
Through my Power,
So You."

Yes, Father, All-Powerful,
Conceive through grace
In my childless soul. so that
I will bring forth life -- Jesus,
The promised Babe.

The same
Who John the Baptist
Roared in the echoing desert:
"Freedom is coming!"
"Release is coming!"

Who is coming? Who is being born?

Jesus,
Who will pour the Spirit into limping souls;
Who will clothe those shabby with sin;
Who will destory the Enemy;
Who will show mercy on sinners.

Jesus,
The Servant King, the Messiah,
Whose vision is beyond the horizon,
Whose temple is the Universe'
Whose choir is Creation, and
Whose message knows no mid-night.

Father,

Yes, He who is King
Was born to serve --
Humility rich,
Meek powerful, and

Our Brother.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
