Sufficient

"...sufficient to you is my grace .... For whenever I will be weak,
then I am mighty." 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Father,

Would the world be a "giant ear,"
Open by all peoples and lands
To hear Your Voice --
A Bell with the peal of peace.

But not so,
A drum rolls louder and louder
Than Your Bell, and
Violence marches to this roll.

Boots of violence tramp on peoples,
Boots covered with the mud of plague
Spread a bubonic plague of spirit.

Numb to blood, numb to torture,
Deaden to death's stiff stare, while
So many say "good-by"
But lack the chance.

The coffins fill
As Jesus hangs on the cross of war.

Yes,
Welcome to the  world of lead
Where lead rules, not You, Father; No,
The short sharp sound of flying lead
Jams Your Voice.

One asks:
"Is 'Cain' so grained in the soul?"
The answer:
"Yes! ONLY grace will cut the grain out."

Grace?
Not as a bandage, not as a splash,
But as the root of the soul
Planted in acceptance --
A radical "yes" to the soul's Adam,
(A Paul of Tarsus "yes.")
For this will lead to You, Father.

Yes, grace --
God's Wonder,
God's Gold,
The home of soul-refugees, and
Through grace You show Your Face and
Your Bell's ring is heard.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
