Temptation

Temptation

"Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness
to be tempted by the devil." Matthew 4:1

Father,

Through Your Son, the Son of Glory,
You call me to a vocation of forgiveness --
Forgiveness of my sins, my past sins; BUT,
Yes, sadly, I too often resist.

The Tempter seeks to razor my soul
From Your forgiving, so that
I keep thinking of my past sins, and this
Leaves me living in a soul-wilderness.

I mock myself, chew on:
"You are bad."
"No one could forgive that."
"I can't tell anyone.."
On and on and on
The lash cuts.

My trust is in I-devouring,
Not God forgiving. And, for sure,
The Tempter feeds on this shame,
Champions this deceit. For certain
The Tempter joys as my soul wallows
And whipped by the tongue of the past.

BUT, and this is big,
The Tempter is sad whe I turn to Jesus,
The Wound-Healer.

Father,

I think of Jesus, His Wounds,
And say:

"Get behind me Satan, for it is written:
'In Him we have Redemption through His Blood,
The forgiveness of sins according to the riches of His grace'."
Eph 1:7

Then,
My soul kneels, bows and accepts Your Forgiveness
As You crush the Tempter and uproot my past sins.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
