Prayer

"O Lord, give ear to my prayer, it does not rise from deceitful lips."
Psalm 17:1

Father,

Swell my soul with grace,
Then flush and ruddy, and
Not anaemic, it will
Lift to You in prayer.

Sweep my soul with awe,
With waves of wonder, then
Awe-silenced, sky quiet,
Slepless my prayer will not be,
No, it will fill with love-tremble.

Yes, as the vigor of spring
Lies hidden in winter's soil,
So, the drive of prayer
Lies hidden in the soul's winter cries.

Yes, as air currents
Beneath gliding wings,
So, with Jesus' words
I will soar to You Father,
You, "who are in heaven."

Father, "Holy" is Your Heart and Soul,
It blinds me, it quiets me;
It elevates me, it compells me,
It is Warm and Breathing
As an oceanic breeze.

Father, Your "Kingdom" is Your "Will,"
Just as in Jesus heaven and earth are one,
So, with courage as my companon,
May my footsteps be in Your Kingdom, and
May I walk Your Will with legs of grace.

Father, feed me Your "daily bread"
As I labor through life's rivers,
And maneuver it's bridges, Yes,
As I travel unshod through Your Kingdom today,
And sit at Your table to come.

Father, let humilty be my root and
Break through my proud earth, and
Tree into "forgiveness" --
By You of my sins,
By me of other's woundings.

Father, let not "temptation's"
Deceptive warmth, cold kiss,
Waste and wandering,
Lead me.

No, "deliver" me from evil's
Haunting cabins.

Amen.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
