Ego-Born

Ego-Born

"For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven
is my brother, my sister, my mother." Matthew 12:9

Father,

Untie me
From all ego-born suffering,
From a life birthed through my ego's will,
Not Your Will,
Too much ache, too much sore.

So, I ask:
What star will guide me?
You, Father? With Jesus? or,
My ego? My will?

If my ego, eventually,
I will be water-logged,
All joy-blood choked,
Stuck in a self-digging life,
Wolf  pawed by the world and flesh,
Wandering in an embalmed darkness.

If You, I break loose, live unpolluted,
No more a stubble soul,
No more ego tedium,
No more success hunger,
No more old clothes.

Sure, the answer is clear,

But,
Too much Adam is in my soul,
Too much of the Serpent's sting,
So, I cry out for a life of grace.

Grace?
The sun that wakes the Jesus-seed
In my soul.

Then, only then,
Will I root in Your Will and
To Jesus be a brother or sister.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
