"And who does not take up his cross and follow me
is not worthy o fme." Matt. 10:38

Father,
When trapped in the pit of loss,
Or narrowed by sickness,
Or the creep of death, a loved one,
I war with Your Will.
With my will's sword
I fight You, rebel, defy, only
To end cut off fromYou --
A stranger facing a wall
Even in prayer,
My tongue is imprisoned.
So, Father, I pray for the grace
To see my struggle as a sign,
Yes, a sign
That Your Smithy's Arm
Is raised and weilding
Your Smithy's hammer
To beat the sword of my will
Into the ploughshare of Your Will, and this
On the Anvil of Jesus, Your Son.
Who cried:
"Abba, Father, all things are possible for You,
Take this cup away from me, but not as I will,
But as You will." Mark 14:36

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
