Unless

Unless

Father,

Your Son spoke straight:
"Unless you become as a child,
You will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven."
(Matt 18:3)

Yes, a child:
Not a waif of the world,
Nor an orphan of the flesh,
Nor a brat of the demons,
But a child of the Kingdom,
Who rushes to be held in Your Arms.

Yes, a child:
Suckled on the milk of grace,
A pupil of Your Word, and
Profound with trust.

Yes, a child:
Who holds tight Your Hearty Hand,
Who sleeps warm on Your Firm Chest, and
Who bears safe on Your Wide Back.

Yes, a child:
Who You discipline with check,
Who You tutor with care, and
Who You reward with rescue --Your Kingdom.

Father,

I am Your child, and when the wind blows hard,
You are my Father, and then the wind blows soft.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
