Envy

"A peaceful heart gives life to the flesh,
but envy rots the bones." Proverbs 14:30

Father,

I turn to You, Your Power,
A Power greater than time.

This Power, Your Grace,
Is a must for me to love,
To grow in love for others.

Why?

The noose of envy
Is strangling my soul.

The other,
Their brag, their success,
Their talents, their possessions,
I covet and resent and begrudge, and this
Eats the marrow of my soul's bones.,
Much as rot eats away a tree's life.

This grudge
Preys on my joy,
Channels the venom of self-pity, and
Laments with  the moan of self-wailing.

Father, I prey:

Widen my squinting eyes,
Unhook me from the demand --
I must be the other and
Not me.

Yes,
Envy is a wintry death,
The death of Your gifts to me.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
