Surrender

"Surrender yourselves to God as living men
who have risen from the dead." Romans 6:13

Father,

Defeated.
My waring-will
No longer works.

It's battle march of pride's prance
Leaves only a famine soul, joy unripe;
Living Jesus-less days, winter long;
Trammelled under a brooding silence,
Always tasting the sour of sin;
My waring-will broke, defeated. Although

You live in a far away land
Without days nor months nor years; still,
You are very near, hugging-close; now,
Fill my days and months and years
With Your Victory -- the Liberty of Quiet,
For I am so tired, so very tired, of fighting.
My waring-will broke, defeated.

I surrender. And,

I bleed with Jesus in Gethsemene:
"Not my will, but Thine be done."
And gone the pitch of war howls,
I kneel under the silence of Your Mercy
To part with my will and
To make way for Your Will.

In this moment,
I walk open-handed through the Spirit's Power --
One hand in Your Hand, Father,
One hand in the Hand of Jesus -- the Treaty-Maker.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
