Always Mindful

"When I consider the heavens, the work of Your Fingers, the moon and the stars which you have ordained, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him." t Psalm 8: 3-4

Father,

Stir my soul's prayer-flame,

Wake my soul to Your Hands work, and

I will gaze on You with praise.

Stretch my petty vision,

Rude and thieving,

With the swell of awe.

You laid down the heavens -

The sun and moon,

The earth and planets,

Awesome.

Yet, you also created me,

Yes, me, Your Hand touched me

Through all --

My soul's toil and my soul's rest.

Awesome

As a Sheltering Tree, you shade

The dial of my whole life,

With silent sight and steady watch,

You canopy all my turns.

Awesome.

But, why? Why? Why me?

So sinful! So selfish!

A brief flash!

A small scale before Your cosmic scale!

Yet, [incredible]

My pulse's beat you listen to,

Always mindful.

Why?

You share Your Son with me,

He dies for me,

Why?

You tell me

I am not surplus,

Nor an accident.

Why?

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE,

YOUR LOVE FOR ME --

Always mindful,

Always there.

Truly awesome.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
