Depression 1

"Why are you cast down, O my soul? Why are You disquieted?
Hope in God, for I shall praise Him for the help of His deliverance."
Psalm 42:5

Father,

Pull me out of these waters, for
The whirling waters pull me down, and
Your Voice is drowning.

Yes,
The owls of the dark night screech,
My day is midnight, and
Comfort is threadbare and dingy;
I breathe in a windowless room.

Sadness surrounds me,
Heavy rings, tear circles
Seal me from silence,
Stockade me from soulease.

Dead-bearing is my soul,
Stirless and stagnant,
Lifeless locked.

Yet, Father,

I believe, I so believe, that
You illumined Gethseme's dark, and
Jesus stood up, and walked to Your Will.

So, I seek Your Touch, the Power that
Gave life to lonely chaos,
Lighted the Lamps of the Universe,
Greened the Earth, and
Souled the dust to Your Image -- Mankind.

Yes, I believe, I so believe, that Your Power
Will open my soul to Your Touch, and

Deliver me from my "self."

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
