Greatest

"... but the greatest of these is love." 1 Corinthians 13:13

When love is stingy
Or frugal or thrifty or sparing
Jesus does not thrive.

Not so
When the soul is God rich, then
The richness of others reveals, and
The soul works not as a usurer
Calling for the high interest of power over others.

Only through gentle grace, kind grace
Will the soul resist the shout:
"But, I am justified ..."

Sounds covering-up fear, the tyrant
Who misers love, and
Tightens the soul in poverty --
Love poor.

Father,

Let my  soul flow
With the sap of stored-grace and
Be the oak whose wood
Frames the Home of Jesus --Love.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
