Pilgrimage

"And this is eternal life, that they should know you
the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you sent."
John 17:3

The Christian's life is a pilgrimage,
A journey to You Father, and
Who You sent -- Jesus.

Yes,
An odyssey from sin's drudge,
An exodus from slavery,
To a home of forgotten pain,
To a world untouched by man's blight,
To a life sprayed by Love's fountain --
Your Home, Father, the World of the Triune God.

The begging of emptiness
Powers this naked-footed trek
Through the wilderness of the world and flesh,
Always longing for the marble corridors of love,
One endless, spider-web free,
But, yes, but, it is never found,
For it is only found in You, My God.

Sometimes the journey is like a blade of grass
Rising from rocky soil;
Othertimes the journey is on a bright path,
And all is generous and tender;
At all times, the journey is winged by this truth:
The restless soul knows only one rest --
In You, my God.

The journey's end?

A new life
Unpenned from the shack of emptiness,
Now filled with God, my Full;
Healed of my sin-sick soul,
Clothed in the fold of God's Freedom.

A new Life,
Now I am a song,
For I am who I am, truly, Your child, saved.

And,
I kneel before Your Face,
Unmasked.

Peace! Peace! Peace!

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
