Lead Us Not

" ... and lead us not into temptation ...." Matthew 6:13

Father,

You love
With the boldness of Creation,
Turn Your Healing Eyes
On my soul and lead me not
Into temptations -- the gilded hooks.

Like pride --
A cathedral full of treason;

Like anger --
A thirsting fire ashing my soul;

Like lust --
A flower covered snake;

Like greed --
A hoarding of empty plates;

Like envy --
A sour'd sadness sparking at
Another's taste of joy;

Like despair --
A sinking leaf alone in hopeless waters.

Father,

With the kneel of faith,
I place before You my temptations --
Harpoons to the kill,
Especially when wounded by the lie:
You know me not,
You care for me not,
You love me not.

Please,
Your Power,
Your healing grace.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
