Envy

"(Jesus) said:'...for from within, out of the heart of man,
comes evil thoughts ...an evil eye...." Mark 7:21-22

Envy is the "evil eye,"
The "ice eye," the "seed eye,"
Breeding a brood of mice --
Gossip, jealousy, hate and lies.

Envy is a coffin-house,
The soul turns into a tomb,
Narrow and sealed and buried
In the loneliness of my "sense of failure" --
A shadowy swell within the soul.

Envy is joy-robbery,
Burgles the other's heart-joy,
Seeks it as one's own --
A hungry hand grabbing the other's joy.

Father,

Envy
Runs after what is not mine,
Therefore, not Your Will for me,
No, it rejects Your Will
As my soul's Guest, my soul's embrace.

In fact,
My thoughts burn with a crebral fire --
"It is not fair!" "Not right!"
"It should be me!"

And,
I seperate from You.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
