The Door

"I am the Door; if anyone should enter through me,
he will be delivered, and shall enter and shall go forth
and find pasture." John 10:9

Father,

The heart knows a chill,
A cry like a hunting hound's howl,
Seeking a fill, a warmth, an answer.

The heart knows
It is not in blind gods,
Nor the anarchy of the world and flesh,
Nor in time and space.

But,
In a Door, a Gift-Door:
The Door is Jesus, the Life-Giver.

Yes, He is
The Fill,
The Warmth,
The Answer.

He waits for me to pass through and
Discover my home, and
Enter His Words,
His life, death and Rising.

Father,

All things pass, but not Jesus' Love,
One greater than the boundless space of the Universe;
Fathom this deep in my heart.

And,
Send Your Grace as rain,
Sky giving, earth receiving,
And,
As a wave obeys the wind
So I the rush of Your Spirit
To pass through this door
And,
Lodge in my  home.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
