Secularism

"Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice before Him with trembling,
bow down in homage, lest He become angry and you perish from
the way...." Psalm 2:11
Father,
Secularism?
The world's clam shell
Shut tight
Around a suffocating world.
Seculaism?
Homage to "Man,"
Not as Your Craft, Your Mirror,
But as the world's height,
The castel's tenant,
The center of the dream.
Secularism?
Homage to "Science,"
Not as the eye to see
Your Canvas, Your Tapestry,
But the only eye to see, for all else
Is superstition and projection.
Secularism?
Homage to "I,"
Not as a cell in Your "we,"
But the only wreath worthy of wear,
The crown, the "I" that walks
Through the crowd with pomp.
Secularism?
Homage to "Non-Belief,'
Not as a source for search,
But the only "adult" realm,
The land without crutch, but
One of militantcy.
Secularism?
Homage to "Reason,"
Not as Your free gift,
But the only smart ship for the journey,
For faith is a paper boat.
Secularism?
Homage to "Consuming,"
Not as a share in Your World,
But the only engine for joy --
Buy, Buy, Buy,
Must have,must, must have.
Secularism?
Homage to "Success,"
Not as fulfilling Your Gifts,
But the ONLY river road to self-esteem.
Even if wide-wasting and confining.
Father,
Unshell our world,
Open it with young eyes
To the dignity of homage,
Not to man, nor science,
Not to non-belief, nor reason,
Not to consuming, nor success,
For they lead to ashes, BUT
To You, Father,
Who leads us to Jesus, the
The Gentle Emancipator.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
