Temptation

Temptation

"Now the snake ...." Genesis 3

Father,

Temptation lures with cunning,
Sly Satan sneaks and steals
With the smooth of flattery,
Ending with sadness and wondering "Why?"

Temptation decoys with lies,
Covered with the paint of truth,
But a counterfeit, a truth-pirate,
Ending with toil and pain.

Temptation seduces with enticement,
Offers the delusion to play god,
To have power over one's life,
Not the Law of the Maker,
Ending with a naked smallness.

Temptation condones with excuses,
Always the "other,"
Always justified,
Always untying from self,
Ending locked in a room of greedy mirrors.

Father,

If I eat temptation's fruit,
I sin;
If I sin,
I divorce from You.

But, You gave given us Jesus, the Tempted-One,
Who clothes us in the combat dress of grace and
Unites us to His battle and agony and victory.
(Matt 4:1-11//Matt 26:39//Rom 5:20)

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
