The Sermon

(a sapphic stanza poem)

Hope-filled crowds have gathered upon the mountain,

all intently praising the Man who speaks there.

Precious hands are beckoning those who gather

closely, to hear Him.

Joyful teachings echo throughout the people;

those who listen - they shall become the living.

Look!  You'll find Him there on the mount, still standing -

Jesus, our Savior.

Matthew 5; The Sermon on the Mount

(Made famous by the Greek poetess Sappho in 600 B.C., the Sapphic stanza is

a metric poetic form spanning 4 lines.  The form has 3 hendecasyllabic lines,

each consisting of the following feet:  trochee, trochee, dactyl, trochee, trochee.

The 4th concluding line has a dactyl followed by a trochee...the last line of the

stanza is known as the Adonic line.)
