The Shamrock

Once long ago in ancient Ire,

St. Patrick stopped the pagan fire.

He let the living water flow

o're non-believers there, to glow

within the everlasting Word;

God called on him; he was assured.

And there within the valley green-

the meadows, woods and fields serene,

he found within the clovers reach

divine encouragement to teach

of how the shamrock - petals three-

speaks of the Holy Trinity.

"It is both one leaf and it's three-

as is with God, as meant to be"...

St. Patrick told, and others found

new faith in spirit to abound;

divinely called to earthly duty-

St. Patrick saw the shamrock's beauty.

(Legend credits St. Patrick with teaching the Irish about the doctrine of the Holy Trinity
 by showing people the shamrock, a three leafed plant, using it to illustrate the Christian
 teaching of 3 persons in one God.  For this reason, the shamrocks are a central symbol
 for St. Patrick's Day.)
