The House Is Haunted

by Jean Mollett

The children are adults now,
but when they were children, this
is what they were told not to
do.

The house is haunted,
stay away from it. Well,
the children just had to
check it out.

The kids discovered a short
cut up thru the parking lots.
Then up over a hill, there
were stairs leading up the
hill. Then a long sidewalk.

On top of the hill, along
the the sidewalk, were shops,
doctor offices, and a big
grassy area. At the end of
the sidewalk, there were steps
going down to the main walkway.

Then a two lane street. The streets
were Pennsylvania Ave, it crossed over
Central Ave. The house was on
Pennsylvania Ave. We passed it
everyday going to school on
Central Ave. We had a couple
more blocks to go to school.

Most of the small group backed
out going to see it after school.
There were about 7 of them, only
2 were brave enough to go to the
house. The two girls took walkie
talkies with them. It was okay
til it started getting dusk.
Carrie stayed at the steps, while
Sherry went by herself.

Sherry went into haunted house,
she radioed back for Carrie to come.
Something strange is happening,
come here quickly. When She did arrive,
they both witnessed a man with a
hatchet in one hand and a hangmans
rope in the other hand. Strange
lights glowing on and off. He saw
us, started yelling. They ran like
the wind. They didn't go back at
evening time, it was safe during
the day. When we walked to school
after that, we got on the far side
of the hill from it. Or went around
thru the main streets.

Author's Note: The house was big, it was a mansion. It was red brick, with big colonial poles. The vines growing up around it, made it look scary at evening time. Never found out whether it was an office, or someone lived in it. After that we didn't care. This was an event that happened when I was a child. Everything that happened is true. The man, house and shops, offices, etc, true. Except for the glowing lights going on & off. The girls were true. The girls' names I changed, I knew both of them.
