A Pot Of Blackeyed Peas

A Pot of Blackeyed Peas

It all started when a friend of my husbands
from work  gave him a big mess of blackeyed
peas. They came from his garden, on his farm.
I had to shell them out. I hadn't ever
shelled them before, I worked on them for two days.
In between other work I had to do, it sure takes time.
I finally figured out how to do them faster,
without losing so many peas. And have to go back,
to pick out of my pan, the peas I dropped.
I got two quart size freezer bags full of
blackeyed peas.

I put them in the freezer, didn't want to see
them anymore. I've tried them in a restaurant
once, they're kinda like a Pinto bean.
But they don't have much of a taste, I just
don't understand why people are so crazy
about them. My husband likes them and they're
good for you. One day, I decided to cook a
mess of them for supper. You're suppose to cook
them like you do other beans,
that's what he said.

I had them cooking, forgot I didn't have any
lean ham or bacon to season them. Too late
to go to the store, so I used what I had.
The blackeyed peas smelled good and looked
good cooking, the taste is what counts.
We ate supper, I fixed lean pork chops,
turnip greens, mustard greens mixed together
and mashed potatoes.I tasted them by themselves
and thought they needed something. It was okay
as long as you mixed with other food,
not as good without.

By now I have them in a glass dish, covered.
Everytime I open the refrigerator door, I see
those blackeyed peas, there's got to be a way.
There's got to be a better way to fix blackeyed
peas. I looked in my cookbook and found a recipe
that sounds really good. You have to use a crock
pot to cook them in; the recipe I'll have to
try it. There's got to be a way to make blackeyed
peas taste better, they have a flat taste.
My husband told me, blackeyed peas are
just a flat tasting pea.
Then why are people so crazy about them?
