In My Crochet Basket

by Jean Mollett

In my crochet basket,
there lays the afghan my Mom,
never got to finish. Now it
sits in my basket, waiting for
me to  complete it. It's
along with her pack of crochet
needles, carefully wrapped up
in a pink scarf. Sits on top.
In my crochet basket

In my crochet basket,
Mom had quite a bit in her little
tub, where she could find it. Left
over yarn, another piece of work
started. As time went by, her eyes
weren't the same, so there sat the
little tub all alone. All alone.

In my crocket basket,
lookin'  at her afghan, at the stitches,
wondering how she did it. The zig zag
pattern is very new to me. The granny
square is what I'm used to doin'. I told
Mom one day, I'd like to learn how to
crochet. Okay, lets get started.

In my crochet basket,
so, we sat down and began my first
lessons. It took awhile, but I picked
it up and continue with it. Mom, always
said make sure the yarn is the same when
you're making an afghan. I soon leanrt why
she told me that. The first afghan I made,
was pretty, but the shape wasn't excastly
square all the way around it. Had ~~~~
waves up and down on the right side.
Her crocheting days are over. Miss it.
In my crochet basket.

Author's Note: I would ask Mom now and then if she was making anything. She'd say no. It helped to keep her busy. Since her eyes weren't the same, she stoppeds crocheting. I have a couple of her other afghans and some other work. I have them put away, they're my treasures now from my Mom. From time to time, I use them on the couch and other furniture.

About the Poet
I'm married. I am a grandmother. I love poetry, reading and writing it. Someone inspired me to start writing poetry again. That person is my Pastor.
