Ode To Grandma ( A Story Part 2)

by Jean Mollett

Ode to Grandma,
the last couple of times I saw you
in the hospital. You still had that
beautiful smile, even without your
teeth. You didn't know who I was, you
knew  my oldest sister and Mom.

Grandma had her hair long again, braided
into pigtails, with the salt and pepper
hair. Her hair was beautiful. She still looked
like Grandma, she was a small woman. I
always thought Grandma was cool, cause
she had been wearing blue jeans for years.

Ode to Grandma,
I told you my name, you couldn't remember.
You only knew a few people, but yet I sense
you may somewhere back in your mind. I got
the look and smile from you. It hurt so,
seeing you like that. After we left to go
home, I kept in contact with Irene checking
on you. Heard you had been in and out of the
hospital a couple of times. Doing a little
better, than got worse. Before I knew it you
were gone, oh Grandma.

Ode to Grandma,
I couldn't hardly believe it, not you too.
Yes, it hurts so but I know you're not in
anymore pain or suffering. You're at peace
now with the Lord, like Grandpa. You were
100 years old, 5 months, 27 days to the
day and you didn't look it one bit. Alot
was at your funeral, some I didn't know.
Some I haven't seen since Grandpa's funeral.
It was set up beautiful. You dressed in blue,
your hair braided in pigtails, looked like
yourself. Your age didn't show that much,
you looked good for your age.

Ode to Grandma,
Mom did better than we expected, made sure my
hubby and sister's boyfriend was next to her.
The room, the flowers, everything was beautiful.
There were two men and a woman singing, lovely
songs. I had been crying on and off, was trying
to hold it back. Cause, I was concerned about Mom.
Til I heard this song, I Wish You Were Here, then
the tears pouring, no control. Everything came
to an end, heading to the cemetary, got separated
from the group. Couldn't find them, so Mom went
with my sister and her boyfriend. We had to head
back home. Come to find out, they never found it.
They missed the burial. I love you Grandma, sure
miss you. I miss hearing that Banjo sing.

Ode to Grandma,
Grandma, I still have the 2 what-nots you gave me,
white cat with yellow fur on top. And flowerpot with
a white mouse on it. I have them on my dresser, where
I can see them everyday. Sweet memories.

About the Poet
I'm married. I am a grandmother. I love poetry, reading and writing it. Someone inspired me to start writing poetry again. That person is my Pastor.
